Natural Diamond Chemistry
All diamonds are naturally formed with varying composition. Most natural yellow color diamonds contain some nitrogen. This yellow color is the direct result of the presence of nitrogen in the stone's natural composition. Nitrogen atoms allow the diamond to absorb violet and blue light in the visible light spectrum. When the composition of a diamond includes these nitrogen atoms (an N3 color center that is formed by three connected atoms of nitrogen), the diamond will present varying hues of yellow. The range of yellow color can move from colorless to a pale yellow, or even bright yellow. The nitrogen atoms can also cause darker hues including tan or amber.
Vivid yellow diamonds are:
- Among the most rare and expensive gems in the world.
- Among the 100 largest diamonds in the world.
