The largest yellow diamond ever discovered was found in South Africa more than 200 years ago. This magnificent yellow diamond was 287 carats and was originally purchased by Tiffany Jewelers for $18,000 in the late 1880s. This beautiful, light-yellow stone was cut into a brilliant 90 facet, 128 cushion-cut that was later named the Tiffany Diamond.
The cutting of the Tiffany Diamond took over a year to complete. For years, the Tiffany Diamond was the main attraction at expositions like the Chicago Columbian in 1893, the Pan-American in 1901, the Chicago Century of Progress in 1933-34, 100-year celebration of the Kimberly Mine, the 1939 World's Fair in New York, and the 1957 Tiffany Ball - where the stone was set into a beautiful diamond necklace. In 1961, the Tiffany Diamond gained a huge amount of public notoriety when Audrey Hepburn wore the Tiffany Diamond necklace in the award-winning film Breakfast at Tiffany's. Following the filming of Breakfast at Tiffany's, a famous Tiffany designer - Jean Schlumberger - fashioned the diamond into a beautiful brooch, entitled "Bird on a Rock".
Recently, a number of famous Hollywood celebrities have taken note of the beauty, excitement, and attraction of yellow diamonds. For example, Katie Holmes was given a beautiful yellow diamond engagement ring by her fiance, Tom Cruise. Elton John purchased a 25-carat yellow diamond ring. At the 2005 Academy Awards, there were a number of famous people walking the red carpet, dressed in yellow diamonds, including: Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Mary Hart and Kathy Griffin. And, famed singer, song writer and film star Usher also purchased an eye-popping designer watch that sparkles with approximately 1,000 tiny yellow diamonds in a portrait on the face of the watch.
One of the most famous yellow diamonds is called The Sancy. This exceptional 55 carat, light yellow diamond was originally purchased in 1570 by the French Ambassador to Turkey, Nicholas Harlai, the Seigneur de Sancy. The beautiful yellow stone has a number of unique features, including its unusual fluorescence of yellow and pink. However, the most unique feature of the stone may be its unusual history. In 1477, it was rumored that The Sancy diamond was lost by Charles, Duke of Burgundy on the field of battle. Throughout history, The Sancy Diamond has been loaned to the French Kings Henry III and Henry IV, sold to the English Crown and then sold back to the French Crown by James II. It was used to raise money for war, lost for an unpaid loan, bought by a Cardinal, willed to the French Crown and stolen in a great heist of the French Crown jewels. The Sancy Diamond is among the most famous European diamonds and now resides in the Louvre.
All diamonds are naturally formed with varying composition. Most natural yellow color diamonds contain some nitrogen. This yellow color is the direct result of the presence of nitrogen in the stone's natural composition. Nitrogen atoms allow the diamond to absorb violet and blue light in the visible light spectrum. When the composition of a diamond includes these nitrogen atoms (an N3 color center that is formed by three connected atoms of nitrogen), the diamond will present varying hues of yellow. The range of yellow color can move from colorless to a pale yellow, or even bright yellow. The nitrogen atoms can also cause darker hues including tan or amber.
Vivid yellow diamonds are:
- Among the most rare and expensive gems in the world.
- Among the 100 largest diamonds in the world.
- Only available to select consumers.
In the late 1800s, a large yellow diamond vein was found in South Africa's Cape Province. The diamonds discovered in this unique discovery were predominately light yellow in color. These diamonds quickly became known as "Cape" diamonds, named after their geographical origin. At the time, yellow Cape diamonds were unusual and unique from more common colorless stones found in India and Brazil.
Today, yellow diamonds are more common than they were back in the late 1800s. However, only one diamond in every ten thousand diamonds is a color diamond. One of the colors growing in interest among consumers is yellows. All light-yellow diamonds are called Cape diamonds regardless of their origin.
Gemological laboratories often refer to intense or vivid yellow diamonds as "Canary" yellow. Canary yellow diamonds are very rare when compared to more common "Cape" diamonds. Canary diamonds contain much more nitrogen, but their color is more of a gold color.

How rare are yellow diamonds?
Are Suncrest diamonds synthetic?
Suncrest diamonds are all natural diamonds that have been carefully selected, heated, and polished to bring out their beautiful yellow color. Suncrest diamonds are not synthetic or artificial in any way.
Are Suncrest diamonds artificially color-coated or irradiated?
Suncrest diamonds are not artificially color-coated or irradiated. Suncrest does not artificially add to or remove anything from the diamond.
What is the difference between irradiating and heating a diamond?
Irradiating a diamond artificially changes the color of a stone by putting it under intense radiation, using electrons to stimulate a yellow color in the diamond. Irradiation penetrates only a few millimeters into the pavilion of the stone, applying a layer of yellow. Unfortunately, when an irradiated stone is touched by a jeweler's torch, its color can fade or often completely disappear. This is a common problem for jewelers as they set or retip an irradiated diamond. Unlike irradiation, Suncrest diamonds are all natural diamonds that are heated under pressure to bring out their stunning color. This color is permanent and is consistent throughout the entire stone. The Suncrest color will never fade or diminish under any condition.
What is the difference between coating and heating a diamond?
Low clarity diamonds are generally color-coated, or "painted", to achieve a brighter color in the stone. These artificially treated diamonds can lose or change their color through polishing or under normal wear and cleaning. When a color-coated diamond is touched by a jeweler's torch, its color will completely disappear. Unlike color-coated stones, Suncrest Diamonds are all natural diamonds that are heated under pressure to bring out their natural color. This color is permanent and is consistent throughout the entire stone. The Suncrest color will never fade or diminish under any condition.
What is the difference between a synthetic and heated diamond?
All man-made diamonds are synthetic. According to the Jewelers of America, "Synthetic diamonds are diamonds that have been created by man with special equipment in a laboratory." Cubic Zirconium, Moissanite, and other diamond substitutes are all lab-created, man-made stones. Suncrest diamonds, on the other hand, are all natural diamonds that have been carefully selected, heated, and polished to bring out their beautiful yellow color. Suncrest diamonds are not synthetic or artificial in any way.
How does Suncrest heat its diamonds?
Suncrest uses a simple heating process to bring out the stunning yellow color found in each Suncrest stone. This heating process is similar to that used for sapphires, rubies, and other gemstones to bring out their natural color. In addition to applying heat to each diamond, the process recreates similar conditions of heat and pressure to those found in the earth during the formation of diamond.
Are Suncrest diamonds certified?
With all Suncrest diamonds, you can enjoy the security of knowing that each diamond (.75 carats and larger) has been graded and certified with reputable, industry-recognized certification laboratories.
Are Suncrest diamonds conflict-free?
Like other members of the diamond industry, Suncrest Diamonds has adopted the Kimberly Process to help in regulating the rough diamond trade and reduce the conflict diamond problem. Suncrest Diamonds is committed to working with only authorized Kimberly-processing suppliers, providing assurance that each Suncrest stone was not illegally traded.
How rare are yellow diamonds?
Natural yellow diamonds are beautiful and rare. These diamonds routinely command enormous prices at famous auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's. Click here for more information on the origin of yellow diamonds.
Suncrest diamonds are all natural diamonds selected for their quality and beauty. Each Suncrest diamond is carefully selected, heated, and polished to bring out its stunning color and inner beauty.
Every natural diamond in the world is formed under extreme heat and pressure deep inside the earth's crust. Suncrest takes these natural diamonds and applies a simple heating process to bring out their beautiful, stunning color. This exciting color found in each Suncrest diamond is achieved through a basic process of replicating the natural conditions of heat and pressure that existed when the diamond was initially formed.
Suncrest diamonds are:
- Bursting with stunning yellow color.
- Lab-certified.
- All natural - not coated, irradiated, or synthetic.
- Permanent in color - will never diminish.
- Heated to perfection.
Like the heating process commonly used for sapphires, rubies, and other gemstones, Suncrest diamonds are also heated to bring out their beautiful natural color. While some natural yellow diamonds, color-coated stones, or irradiated diamonds have uneven and undesirable color, the heating process for Suncrest diamonds allows the diamond to achieve its most vivid, fancy yellow color equally throughout the entire stone. This unique heating process does not artificially add or remove anything from the diamond's natural composition. As a result, each Suncrest diamond is color unique and comes with a lifetime guarantee that this magnificent color, brilliance, and dynamic beauty will never diminish under any condition.
